Saved layouts

A layout is a saved set of tabs and splits: which pane connects where, what each pane is called, and how big each split is. Open it and every pane connects again.

Say every Monday you open web-01 and web-02 side by side, with db-primary below them, plus a tab for staging-api. Arrange that once, save it as “Prod debugging”, and next Monday it’s one click.

There are two ways to save, depending on how much you want:

To save Use
Every open tab Save layout… on the empty part of the tab bar’s right-click menu, or in the Command Center
Only one tab Save layout… on that tab’s right-click menu, or Save this tab as a layout… in the Command Center

Save layout asks for a name. Type one, such as Prod debugging, and press Save.

What’s saved:

  • every tab and split, with the size of each split
  • which host each pane connects to, or which quick-connect address, or that it’s a local shell
  • each pane’s name, if you gave it one
  • which pane was focused in each tab

Sessions aren’t saved: no scrollback, no running programs. Panes still asking where to connect are left out. If no pane has connected yet, Vaulterm says “Nothing to save yet: connect a pane first.”

Names are up to 100 characters. If a layout already has the name (upper and lower case count as the same), the sheet says “A layout called “Prod debugging” exists. Save again to replace it.” Press Save again to replace it, or change the name.

Any of these opens one:

  • the Saved layouts grid on Home (the Layouts card in v1 · Original)
  • Open layout… on the empty part of the tab bar’s right-click menu
  • the Command Center: type the layout’s name, or @ and part of it

The first time, Vaulterm asks “Open “Prod debugging”?” and says what it will connect, for example “This connects 3 hosts, 1 quick connect, 2 local shells.” Press Open, or tick Always open this layout without asking first to skip the question from then on.

The layout’s tabs open after the tabs you already have. Nothing you had open is closed.

On Home, each layout’s More button offers Rename…, Duplicate and Delete. In the Command Center, highlight a layout and press Tab for Rename, Duplicate and Delete.

  • Duplicate makes a copy called “Prod debugging copy” (then “copy 2”, and so on) that you can change without touching the original.
  • Delete removes the layout. Your hosts aren’t touched.

Delete asks first, with Cancel focused.

To change what’s in a layout, open it, arrange the tabs the way you want, and save again with the same name.

Separately from named layouts, Vaulterm remembers the tabs you had open when you quit. The next time you unlock it, Home offers Pick up where you left off with Resume and Dismiss. See Home.

This is on by default. To turn it off, clear Restore previous session in Settings → Workspace. Turning it off also clears the tabs it had kept.

  • Layouts and the remembered tabs are stored in your encrypted vault, not in preferences.
  • If a layout points at a host you’ve since deleted, that pane opens asking where to connect, with a note saying the host was deleted. The rest of the layout opens as saved.
  • Layouts appear under @ in the Command Center with a summary of what they connect.
